From: Stephanie Morris smorris@mdlab.com
To: Ms. Reid,

Thank you for your recent inquiry. We do offer several PCR tests for Mycoplasma species. Test 338 is our Mycoplasma Panel. This panel includes four individual tests for the following species M fermentans or incognitus, M. hominis, M. penetrans, and M. pneumoniae. These four species specific tests are also available individually. Upon request from prospective patients, we are able to forward a specimen collection kit which would include all materials necessary for their physician to submit a specimen directly to us for PCR testing. This kit includes blood collection tubes, Styrofoam packaging materials, test requisition form, instructions, and a pre-paid DHL or FedEx Lab-pack envelope to ensure overnight delivery of the specimen to our facility. We do require a physician’s written order to accompany every specimen. We also offer a third party billing service, so if they include their insurance information we will attempt to bill for the testing on their behalf. Pricing is as follows;

Test 338: Mycoplasma Panel by PCR $610

Individual species testing by PCR:
M. fermentans $130
M. hominis $130
M. penetrans $130
M. pneumoniae $220

If you have any questions or if patient’s would like to request specimen collection kits directly, please do not hesitate to contact our office toll free (877) 269-0090.

Sincerely,

Subject: Testing for Mycoplasma

http://www.mdlab.com/html/home.html

To Whom It May Concern:

I am a Gulf War veteran and Administrator on the bulletin board for gulfwarvets.com <http://www.gulfwarvets.com/ubb/ultimatebb.php> and I chair the International Gulf War Council <http://gulfwarcouncil.com/> . It is our understanding that testing for Mycoplasma fermentans (incognitus strain) can be obtained through your laboratory.

Will you please provide the procedures in obtaining blood tests for this and the cost involved? Also, do you accept health insurance?

We have several people asking to be tested and your help in directing them is appreciated.

Sincerely,

Gale

Email forwarded from Dr Nass. --Gale

Please post with the MDL information:

MDL does accept medicare reimbursement. Your doctor needs to include a diagnostic code that will justify the test, such as chronic fatigue syndrome, or rheumatoid arthritis.

For CFS/ME or FMS or autoimmune disease patients, The Institute for Molecular Medicine suggests the following lab tests (codes are CPT codes):

1. MycoplasmaTest Panel (CPT: 87798x3, 87581)—Mycoplasma species panel of 4 pathogenic mycoplasmas (M. fermentans, M. penumoniae, M. hominis, M. penetrans) by PCR. Justification: Almost 60% of CFS/FMS and 50% of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) and other autoimmune patients have one or more intracellular, systemic mycoplasmal infections similar to those found in a variety of chronic illnesses [Nicolson et al. Mycoplasmal infections in chronic illnesses: Fibromyalgia and Chronic Fatigue Syndromes, Gulf War Illness, HIV-AIDS and Rheumatoid Arthritis. Medical Sentinel 1999; 5:172-176]. Ultrasensitive and ultraspecific mycoplasma tests can only be done by a small number of labs, most university or government labs that have been trained by us under a U.S. government contract. Specimen Requirements: one (1) 5 cc Lavender top Plastic Tube (EDTA). The blood is collected, immediately mixed and placed on ice, then shipped on wet ice by courier (foreign shipments) to arrive within 24-36 hours.

Can the VA run these tests?
I have NO insurance, and very little income.
I havent kept a job in two years.
What doctors would perform this test ?
Dermatology?
I have rashes that come and go, most of the time I get sores in the areas affected.
Some have scarred me, but everytime I am able to get to the VA hospital, the rash has gone.
Any help is appreciated.
Too tired to go back and forth, its a hour and a half drive to the VA hospital.
