Hey- Enough is enough- we are highly decorated ddgarzilla Administrator posted February 16, 2004 02:51 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Not to make light of the death of this MArine but these are pretty much the same decorations I Recieved in operation Desert storm. I had no idea I was highly decorated.
CAMP PENDLETON — A highly decorated Marine who recently returned from Iraq was killed during a routine training exercise, authorities said Sunday.
Sgt. Emery D. Nyeki, 26, was inside a Humvee with another Marine performing maneuvers when the accident happened at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, authorities said.
"Our condolences go out to the family," said Lt. Nathan Braden, a spokesman for the base.
The name of the other Marine was not released. Authorities said his injuries were not life threatening.
Nyeki, born in Northridge, enlisted in the Marines in October 2000. He was deployed last year in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
The awards he received during his tour include the Combat Action Ribbon, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal and the Presidential Unit Citation.

ShakeyLaw Administrator posted February 16, 2004 14:32 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Given the hardships of service in Iraq, a combat action ribbon and presidential unit citation are a kick in the teeth as decorations go. He died, and this is the gratitude he's shown! I am terribly sorry to him, his memory, and his family...something better should be done. If this is the definition of highly decorated, then 'highly decorated' has lost alot of its meaning since I was in. S.L.

SavageSniper Member posted February 16, 2004 22:23 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- As long as were on the topic, I'm just curious. In the unit I was with the Bronze Star was the highest award given to any soldier to my knowledge and many put in for it had theirs reduced to ArComs. Does anyone know of anything above a Bronze Star being issued anywhere both in 90-91 or in the current conflicts. I've seen award ceromonies covered on 24hr news channels early in the Afghan phase. But were for mostly Purple Hearts and such. I'm not saying anybody in my unit deserved more but I know there many soldiers out there now who are probably more deserving than that of a Bronze star. It maybe that Officers don't want their soldiers being as or more decorated than themselves. Which if is the case is pretty sad. Because while it maybe the officer who makes the decision it's the enlisted that ultimatly engages the enemy. What rank was the guy who crawled in the spider hole after Sadam? NCO I bet. IP: Logged
marky-mark Member posted February 17, 2004 08:20 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The commander, Sgt. Major, and the 1st Sergeants in our battalion all got silver stars, they lived in Camp Eagle II for the majority of our time over there. What a joke! IP: Logged
ShakeyLaw Administrator posted February 17, 2004 16:56 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Same story... Some Sr. NCO buttkissers and officers got the more senior awards while the rest of us got ARCOM's. Most of those in my unit who got Bronze Stars or higher never fired a shot in anger. Then, some of us were driven right between two tank columns that were shooting at each other and get ARCOM's for putting up with those stupid idiots' mistakes. Don't know of anybody in my unit receiving an award higher than the Bronze Star. We actually also managed (by what miracle, I don't know) to receive a Meritorious Unit Commendation and an Army Superior Unit Award...hmm. General Streeter was cussing my LTC a blue-streak on the FM (for driving us between 2 columns of tanks, getting lost, etc.), but we managed to get a MUC...the world is truly a crazy place.

Keith Member posted February 17, 2004 18:52 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I attended an award ceremony in the desert, sometime after the cease-fire, can't remember whether it was VII Corp. or 3AD, there was a few silver stars awarded and it seems alot of bronze stars for valor on down, just a flash from the past, don't know how accurate. rh8x Member posted February 26, 2004 08:31 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've been out of the loop the past 2 weeks; another major ear surgery (you know the type to keep my hearing so I can hear the VA say DENY) and the sale of my house, but I should be back in NJ on Monday thus back in the loop. I have seen both sides of the awards issue.
I was awarded, from many units I served & had contact with, the Bronze Star w/ Valor, 1 ARCOM w/ Valor, 2 ARCOMS, 1 AAM, 1 Humanitarian Service Medal (operation provide comfort/relief), National Defense Medal, Kuwait Liberation Medal, Southwest Asian Medal w/ 3 Bronze Stars, several DA and Unit Citations. I thought I earned every award, and I'm not the type that cares about "fruit salad" Old WWII saying on awards.
I was there long enough to be part of 6 award ceramonies. I saw postal workers getting Bronze Stars (put themselves in for it), An ENTIRE unit stationed in Al Khobar Towers passed out Bronze Stars, ARCOMS and AAM's for bravory in combat, not 1 of those MOTHER F@#$%^&* EVER left Al Khobar the ENTIRE 4 months in theatre!! I tore up the UNIT CITATION they issued me VIA postal mail, because I WAS in the KTO, Northeastern Saudi, and Iraq when they had the award ceramony. I was so ANGRY when I heard these LIMP D!$@%# accepted these awards for playing volleyball, basketball, swimming at half moon bay/hotel california, hanging out on the LOVE BOAT, and sitting around playing poker while more deserving soldiers got "addaboys" as awards. And 1 of the jerks actually contacted me asking me to write a letter on his behalf so he could file a claim with the VA. I told the jerk to take a hike as people that really are sick need my support, not some lazy, REMF. I never heard from anybody in that unit ever again.
I know each person has a role in a war, but I cannot sit back and watch people get screwed out of a deserving award. A very good friend of mine ended up training Kuwaiti's at Ft.Dix during the PGW and missed being there during the war. He eventually made it over in July 91 and performed a miracle with the 3rd AG Postal unit by taking over what the Officers failed or refused to do; PITCH THE MAIL!! He, along with 12 soldiers, pitched 54,000 pieces of mail a day and was rewarded with a unit citation, while the lazy Officers/NCO's all received medals; one a LEGION OF MERIT!!! I know this pissed him off to no end, because he returned in March of 92 and terminated his status in the USAR after 26 years.
To this day it bothers him how he, and the 12 other soldiers were screwed by the very people they had to takeover for.
He also is experiencing illnesses which I think were from visiting, now his wife, in Kuwait. Talk about messed up she lost most of her hearing, her hair is falling out, her memory (short/long) term is shot and she now has Chrones. Sadly, as with my wife, she was over there 12 months with the American Red Cross and nobody seems to know whom to contact so they can get help. Even Chris Smith said he has no idea whom to contact.
Thanks rh8x p.s. If not for my mother's pride, those medals & awards would be in a nike shoe box.

I fought in actual combat with a forward unit way up front and first into Iraq for VII corp and probably for the whole theater, I saw the same crap going on in our unit to. As a matter of fact all the officers in the 2nd ACR got bronze stars, so did most of the sneior NCO's. Seems the only criteria to get a bronze star was to hold an O rank or E-7 and up..
I got a whopping ARCOM, and our unit got a presidential unit citation, of course we were told our unit was the only one to receive this citation in all the gulf war, but in reality they probably gave that citation even to the pakistani truck drivers that trailered our equipment out in the desert.
Awards are a joke, I dont even know where mine are at, and I dont care either..
I value my boy scout awards more than I do any crap I got in the amry or army or however you spell it...
