Member Rated: posted July 02, 2006 04:33 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Very interesting... Spearheaders have every right to be proud of what they did (and do). As an Air Force medic, and after having been staged on a Marine compound in the theatre, I came to appreciate what the Army and Marines did with a whole new and healthy respect. Besides, the rest of my family are either former Army or Marine soldiers.
Maybe we need a thread just about what each of our members here did and where they were during the war? It would be important to include those who didn't deploy to the theatre of operations and/or those who were in other areas of the world, because you can't pull off a successful operation without the support from home. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posts: 1271 | Registered: Jul 2005 | IP: Logged |

Member Rated: posted July 02, 2006 01:52 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Gale, I think that would be very helpful as I am trying to locate help for one of my veterans who was stationed with a group that were neither his own branch, nor was he ever included on any of the rosters for their units as he was there because they were short handed.
It would also allow those of us who work with veteran's to better identify where we might be of more assistance by linking people back up from their same location or unit. Thank you!

Member Rated: posted July 02, 2006 05:58 PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I found a couple of good places to seek out vets I served with online. For me, the best was classmates.com of all places ... they have a thorough military unit list and lots of members who have signed up over the years. The other was at military.com ... for obvious reasons. I'm sure there are others but my memory isn't as good as it used to be, and I don't always have the website saved to my browser. § Steve -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Posts: 16 | From: Ottumwa, Iowa | Registered: Jun 2006 | IP: Logged |

Member Rated: posted July 12, 2006 09:52 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I was with 2/29 FA Battalion A Battery and we was assigned to shoot the battalions float gun making us gun 9. I did advance party missions and #1 cannoneer. We shared some of the same sand with 2/3rd as we were a direct support Arty Battalion we supported 1stCav before the ground war then went through the berm supporting the 1st ID, then was attached to 3rd AD and shot with 2/3rd FA when engaging the Republican Guard. I was told we also shot some missions for the 1st AD. So we kinda shot a little for most of VII Corps Divisions during the Storm. Its good to hear from some of you guys on the ground out there with us. I hope your all getting by good these days. The price was worth the admission the way I look at it. Gale, great idea, have members share their background(s) and when and if they were deployed to the Gulf War.
I was deployed and participated in Desert Storm in 1991. At that time and for most of my 26 year career I worked in AF Special Ops. Like other fellow Vets here I am limited on shared information, sorry. But I do encourage others to share what they can. I retired from the Air Force Reserve in 2003.

I was a civilian, always was, always will be. But I did have a small role in the operation. I like to pass it on because it shows what the civilians were thinking and willing to do to support you guys (and gals).
I was Monmouth County (NJ) EMS coordinator in 1990. I participated in the planning sessions for the return of casualties to the States and their dispersal through available hospital beds in the civilian medical centers. Planning called for a medical evacuation to begin at the 1000 casualty per day level, and they were to arrive at McGuire AFB in NJ. I was responsible for providing ambulances and support services from the 57 Monmouth County First Aid Squads (NJ is almost all volunteer). I was held over to run the operation in 1991 if needed.
When the Storm erupted on Friday night I recieved a call from one of the higher-ups to arrange a meeting with squad representatives to release and prepare to implement our plan. I set it up for Sunday morning at the county Fire Academy. They gave us a (too) small room for the meeting. I expected most squads to be represented, but I got 100% participation, and most squads sent more than one person. It was, well, intimate.
These people are all volunteers, with regular jobs to do, families to support, in short, civilians. I outlined the plan, and told them to commit what they could, realizing that they needed to continue to provide service to their home towns, 24/7. I told them to be conservative, and not to promise anything they couldn't deliver. What I got was an eye-opener. Out of 57 squads, I had firm committments for 65 ambulances and crews, 24/7, for the duration.
They were going to do their part, and nothing was going to get in their way.
I was pretty damn proud of those guys.
Fortunately, as we know, there was nothing like those kinds of numbers, and the plan was never implemented. But they were there for you. Believe it.
While our Servicemen and Women are the best we have to offer, those volunteers were a close second. It was an honor to work with them.
One humerous note: When I put out the County Police message calling the meeting (hey, let the cops knock on doors, right?) the last line on the form is for the issuing authority. This one went out, legitimately, as George H.W. Bush, President of the United States. Funny thing, nobody argued with me.

I was fresh out of AIT, landed at King Faud on Feb. 1st, 1991. Was attached to 7/101st AV. During ground war was at fob Cobra for the most part and after was there until we got to go home. Moved around so much that is the only place I somewhat remember.

2Bn, 3rd Marines out of Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii. Actually in the air on the way to Okinawa the very day Saddummy invaded Kuwait. Arrived in Saudi on Jan 14th. So I was officially there for Shield and Storm. Stayed at "DSA" Al Mishab then just south of Khafji and then a couple of different places out in the middle of the desert. Finally ended up taking part in the capture of the Kuwaiti Int'l. Airport.
Then the problems started.......
