Served with the 1st Marine Expeditionary Force. I was a Helicopter Gunner, arived at Al Jubail in August 1990. Moved to Tanajieb around christmas and on to Lonesome Dove where we did troop inserts into kuwait and Southern Iraq pre/during and post ground war. Lived in Foxholes, tents and our helicopters. We crashed 2 of our birds (everyone lived). I remember taping the leading edges of our rotor blades (no sh!t tape!)because the sand would eat holes in them after a few hours of flight. After the war, we returned to Al Jubail, tore the helicopters down, packed them into C-5's and flew home in late March 1991.

Pstaggs, sounds like you got stuck on the stay back teams like I did. What were the birds in the 8/101st? I ended up attached to HHC 101st after the Ground War. What was the MOS?

I joined the US Navy April 4th, 1986 and I finally seperated 16 years later February 8th, 2002. I find it easier to show my commands in a list.

I was a machinist mate submarine auxiliaryman in charge of over 85% of the ships systems excluding nuclear designated equipment. Qualified marksman 45 cal pistol and m-16. I am still under a 50 year security agreetment with DOD that forbids me from discussing submarine operations. I can say I have done Northern deployments, which are deployments above the arctic circle, and I have deployed to the med. If you want to know what I did, please read a book by Sherry Sontag named "Blind Man's Bluff", it is a pretty much dead on for what submarines did back in the 80's and 90's. To know what a navy person did, you have to refer to their chest candy so I will list what I have so other navy folk will know.
Submarine warfare qualification (dolphins) Meritorious unit Commendations-4 Navy "E" aka Battle "E"-5 Good Conduct Medal-4 Navy expeditionary Medal-3 National Defense Service Medal-1 Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal-1 Armed Forces Service Medal-1 Sea Service Ribbon-5 (this doesnt count 4 deployments under the 45 day requirement) Arctic Secice Ribbon-1 (can only be awarded once) Marksman ribbon
I served during DS/DS only it was guarding a submarine in a secure drydock.LOL.

I was with the Bco 2/22Inf Fort Drum Ny. We were individual Platoon replacement for the 101st and 82nd Airborne if they took to many casulties. We ended up guarding the 2/1 ADA out of TX. We flew into Air base (KKK) and trained just outside there. Then moved to the northern sector where the french tanks guarded the left flank, and the 101st staging base. I got into country on the 28 Dec 1990 and Left sometime in Mar 1991. Our unit at Fort Drum wanted us back for a tour to the NTC rotation. LOL one sand box to another.

3rd Battalion 7th Marine Regiment; part of the Regimental Combat Team 4 " Task Force Grizzly", I was a Dragon (anti-armor) squad leader attached to 1st platoon, Lima company. I hope there are some on this site who served with mine or other task Forces: Taro,Papa Bear, Ripper etc. We got the full effect of all the documented Hazards. Combat,Friendly fire, 5 gas alarms, The "darkness" of the Burgan Oil Fields, and the countless other environmental hazards. I've been combating the VBA for 5 years over all these things. I'm glad to be aboard; I've learned more from browsing this site in the last month than from all the Veteran Service officers over the last 17 years. My eyes have been opened to at least 10 other conditions that are Gulf related (if I can prove it). I want to thank everyone for sharing their opinions in navigating this process of Disability Compensation for our Service related conditions. With this Website, I believe most will prevail in their fight. Knowledge is Power
