U.S. Veterans Affairs worker indicted on bribery, other charges

HARTFORD, Conn. --A Connecticut-based supervisor for the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has been indicted on charges of steering federal contracts to companies in which he had a financial stake.
A 14-count indictment charges Kevin J. Malarney, 55, of Branford with bribery, conflict of interest, making false statements and filing a false tax return, U.S. Attorney Kevin J. O'Connor said Friday.
Malarney, a construction and maintenance supervisor at the VA facility in West Haven, is accused of steering contracts to two unnamed businesses in which he had a financial interest, O'Connor said.
In return, the companies paid his mortgage, automobile insurance, credit card bills and other personal expenses, O'Connor said. The alleged criminal activity occurred between July 2002 and September 2005.
According to the indictment, Malarney also made false statements to federal officials about his connection to the companies, and filed tax returns that did not include income he received from them. The amount of the income was not listed in the indictment.
Malarney appeared Friday before U.S. Magistrate Joan G. Margolis in New Haven and was released on a $75,000 bond, O'Connor said.
