Illinois Gov. Blagojevich Signs Bill Requiring Insurers To Cover Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
Aug 16, 2005
Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich (D) on Sunday signed a bill that requires insurance companies in Illinois to cover treatment for post-traumatic stress disorder, the Chicago Tribune reports. The law affects insurance plans that are required to cover treatment services for serious mental illnesses. According to the governor's office, nearly 30% of U.S. men and women who have served in a war experience PTSD. A Department of Veterans Affairs investigation in May showed that 2.8% of Illinois veterans are rated 100% disabled because of PTSD and that Illinois ranks last in the nation in disability pay for the disorder and other mental disabilities. "[PTSD] is a terrible condition that hurts thousands of veterans in Illinois. It's a disorder that makes it hard for them to work, take care of their families or function fully in society," Blagojevich said. He added, "Our veterans put their lives on the line defending this country. It's our duty to help them get the treatment they need" (Chicago Tribune, 8/15).

most insurance companies only cover 50% of mental health costs, and most have lifetime caps of like 50,000. I don't even a governors order can make them pay more.
