In just a few short weeks I'll be traveling to Dallas to join with fellow veterans Aug. 5 through 8, in commemorating the 20th anniversary of Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait.
Veterans of the Persian Gulf War, as well as veterans of our current wars, will gather for a health fair that focuses on modern-day battle-related illness and injury.
In the years that have passed since the first Gulf War, our Congress has made great strides in helping veterans afflicted with war-related illnesses. But there remains much more to be done.
Thanks to veteran advocates like Ross Perot, who will attend the event to receive an award for his long-term commitment to veterans' causes, and to distinguished guests like Veterans Affairs Chief of Staff John Gingrich, Dr. Lea Steele from the Research Advisory Committee on Gulf War Veterans' Illnesses, and Dr. Robert Haley of the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, who has championed medical research leading to significant breakthroughs in the mysteries surrounding Gulf War illnesses, this event promises to be yet another step in the direction that all Americans should be cheering for - to once and for all determine the precise causes of Gulf War illnesses, and to develop effective treatments for those afflicted with these chronic auto-immune, viral and neurological illnesses.
More important, this event seeks to work toward ensuring that future generations of American warriors are protected from the toxins that seem all too prevalent on modern-day battlefields.
Anyone desiring more information about this event is encouraged to go to the National Gulf War Resource Center's website at www.NGWRC.org.
